The Beautiful Humming of Ms. Fortune

Master of Alchemy I discovered Led to Sea as support to Laura Veirs at The Cellars, Eastney, Southsea, 11 July 2008.

Alex Guy is never afraid to embrace the eccentric and unconventional, especially in her earlier compositions the 2007 eponymous debut LP and the 2008 Fear of Flight live EP (pots and pans percussion!). But at the heart of all her songwriting are the strings, particularly the viola.

This LP is Guy's most mature, with her quirkiness mostly expressed through vocal rhythms more than the music. Favorite track: Every Ship Sails Alone.

Facing South 05:07
As I watch the moon draw the tide away I think of you and I think it's strange to feel this pull so strongly when you're sailing away I'm facing, facing south south to the wind and the sea oh come for me I'm facing, facing south south to the wind and the sea please comfort me my dear You seek out its company leave my arms, strong and secure run from me to the dark of the sea It's a wild, tumbling thing that cares nothing for you loves no one And I see that time slips away from me and I've grown grey, dry you're halfway around the world by now you're halfway around the world I'm facing, facing south south toward the wind and the sea oh come for me facing, facing south south toward the wind and the sea oh come for me my dear, oh please comfort me

Breathe Some 02:53
In the time it takes to breathe I've grown old watching men younger than me search for gold yes, I know each one folds his hand with nothing more to show for all his pain than his words I try to recreate what was lost, lost to me can't make sense of anything truth and lies fall equally close my eyes, still see lonely memories I try to transform into something more than just one life She says, come to bed. it's late I'll draw the curtain, the light's fading no more work tonight and I think, yes its crazy, but each story breathes a little life into this weathered imagery I call my own we all know we all struggle to create a vision worthy of ourselves before we die I try to recreate what was lost, lost to me can't make sense of anything truth and lies fall equally we all know we all struggle to create a vision struggle to create something that's worthy of ourselves before we die
3.
If the sound I hear is something you meant to hide quiet sorrow that cannot be denied you'll find that life you’ve lived inside fosters only a certain kind of lie that tonight will wake you, petrified tonight you'll wake petrified. give them all to me these secrets that you keep whisper in your sleep

So Long 03:42
Let's look back at the time we had with her so long, so long oh it feels so long so long ago my dear Resting here with your hand in mine watching leaves fall leaves fall oh light fades fades away away A simple thing empty grass in sunlight makes tears well tears well up in your eyes oh well, up in my eyes oh well, oh well I watch a single star shining I watch a single flower bloom and there's nothing can take the place she held here Let's go down down to the forest and listen for wind blowing through the leaves quiet footsteps soft between the trees All the same it seems as it was before linger but oh the memory lingers like mist in the morning oh so long so long
6.
I can watch the distance grow pull me from you check the state of disinterest I still call true love that I call true love But I still feel this twisting, burn in my chest that devours all semblance of spark I have left That I say is true love What made you think I'd stay? When you ask, I tell you that nothing has changed I've just learned to hold back to keep myself sane, to keep myself safe I once tried to give myself over to you much too fast I know I fell too hard too soon I thought it was true love don't even know true love maybe it was a true love What made you think I could?
7.
They try to tell me it’s all a lie that this is all pretend
8.
If I close my eyes quickly I won't see your face change as you think of the reasons you won't try to stay let me reclaim the moment before illusion's fade let's just be silent silence stay let there be silence silent we'll remain You'll grow grey while I stay frozen in time we'll disappear ever changing in a slow decay too slow to see with our naked eye too slow to feel, too slow to hear you so slowly we decay If I don't look then you can't show me the distance that's grown here it holds us hostage, since once you say it the words will start to break apart all that we've built here In a moment alone no distractions to shield me I wait in the stillness I sense that the fear will fade away just sit in silence one more day let me have silence one more day I can feel the chill of what's to come when your words fall tumbling out but I take a breath just before you speak and I lay resistance down let the words hold me, pull me down I am cradled in the sound Cradle me in sound

Knifethrower 04:45
I came to you splaying my wrists those brave lilies throats as if to say drink take your teeth and drink Under love sometimes in the ivy room we'd talk of family but never in the day light never without cover of smoke or dark When you told me not to worry I worried anyway and when you told me not to be sad I simply shined the blades and kissed your mouth which was a different country entirely one that believed in amnesty Poem by Sarah Brickman

Landed 04:59
Landed, in this green field show my face to the sun landed, in this strange place looking back, it feels so far from the place from where I've come Now my new life begins the secret life of a king who has fled far from home take me north to the new village where I'll make my mark shaping minds, sweet young men, brilliant shade, and a clear new start Do they search and scour this small world for me my death is their singular task those close to me hid the all signs but it's only a matter of time Safety, has a new face sheltered from the sun brilliance there awaits me linger in the shade of your tongue A handsome king in his prime, secrets kept close in his mind lays the path for a grey, aging hero to write at the end of his time, a work that will redeem all the mundane detail of his common and routine life Here, in a strange place I know that you are near beauty, a true friendship waiting here, soon I’m there just wait for me to arrive. I'll feel in the night, you're working I'll watch your every move, my dear my land waiting to be discovered and recreated by you just invite me to share your table I'll understand you like no one else show me something, just tell me something feel my chest fill with air, my heart rising to meet you We are strangers all this will soon change our lives, intertwining come, let's meet our fate
